3D image analysis is the study of "volumes" reconstructed from a z-stack of optical sections through a biological sample. Historically advanced 3D image analysis has always involved costly high specification computing systems coupled with the most advanced imaging instruments. Now high specification computing power and advanced technology are more accessible and cost effective than ever before. 3D image analysis is fast becoming the standard for biological research publications.


  • Why is 2D imaging often inadequate?

A single 2D image only provides a small part of the complete context of the research. Morphological detail about cellular structures shape, size, location and the relationship between structures in the sample cannot be fully determined in 2D. 3D imaging gives researchers more information about cellular structure and function, providing more confidence and accuracy in new publications.

  • Why has 3D imaging become so important in the present?

3D analysis provides more accurate results. It helps avoid misinterpretation of data by providing more context about precisely what interactions are occurring. 3D image analysis is not based on “what appears to be “interacting”, 3D image analysis provides accurate quantifiable data about what “is” happening in a research sample allowing researchers greater confidence in their results.
